Some thirty years ago, Charles A. Curran (1969) commented that many pastors and members of the clergy, regardless of their religious orientation or spiritual beliefs, had come to the realization that they required knowledge of the theories and techniques of psychology and psychiatry in order to meet the counseling needs of their parishioners, co-religionists, and congregational members.  Curran (1969) distinguished between counseling and guidance, noting that in the case of counseling, what is at work is a process through which a person arrives at the adequate integration of his whole self, while in guidance, an individual merely receives relatively practical advice on coping with difficulties or stress. In the past century, the United States’ government has attempted to do away with discrimination in the workplace. Beginning in 1963, legislators came together to enact the Equal Pay Act (EPA.) The act set guidelines for equal pay for equal work, regardless of gender. In 1964, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act prohibited employment based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin. In 1967, Congress passed the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) meant to protect workers 40 years of age or older. Title I and Title V of the American with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) made it illegal to discriminate against qualified individuals with disabilities. Islam has been portrayed in the media as a faith that needs to be altered if it is to exist in the “modern world” – that is if it fits the narrow frame of the western sensibilities. Neither, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism nor Buddhism has ever been exposed to such harsh condemnation, even if the members of these communities were involved in violent acts aimed at against Americans or the Western world in general. Since September 11, the media has apparently become more conscious of Muslim critiques to the media. Since then, the significant change, which took place in the media’s coverage of Islam and Muslims, was the existence of diversity in which Muslims voiced issues that alarm their religion. (more…)
