Katherine Philips, author of the poem, “Against Love,” was born in 1631 on New Year’s Day. At sixteen she married her fifty-six-year-old stepbrother (her step-father’s son by another marriage). In understanding her views on love, historians note that she had many loves, both platonic and sexual. Part of her literary endeavors centered on the Society of Friendship, a semi-literary correspondence circle primarily made up of women. The themes of each of the selected stories center on issues that Americans face. “What You Pawn I Will Redeem” takes a lighthearted approach to the problem facing the homeless, but on a deeper level the story addresses the issue of how money is too easily gained and spent in the United States. These two stories are similar in theme as it has to do with not working for the money, but “winning” the money with little effort. Mamet’s story is a dark tale of American’s who seemingly have it all materially, but do not value the love and understanding needed to be a happy, well-adjusted family. In the final analysis, all stories deal with the issue of money and the problems having or not having money brings to life. (more…)

After hearing both the versions, I feel that love means different things to men and women. The essential difference that is there between them cannot be denied and the way they approach to love is very different. In my parent’s case my mom did not know what was happening and prefers even now to think that the love grew as they go to know each other, while dad’s account shows that from the very beginning, dad knew what he was doing and the reason that he planned the whole courtship was because he wanted to make sure that when my mom accepted him as her love it would be forever.
