Most of us think of going grocery shopping as a chore – and one that we put off as long as possible until we have run out of milk, toilet paper, and our favorite snack foods. So it’s something of a mystery as to why it should be so much fun when you buy the same foods at a farmer’s market, as people in my neighborhood can do every Wednesday night during the spring and summer months. Except that it isn’t the same food – and it certainly isn’t the same experience at all.
When one goes to a grocery store, the food is displayed as a commodity, something to be sold in as large a quantity as possible to generate the highest possible profit for the store. There is a very little soul in a grocery store. There is no scent of earth turned over in the fallow months of winter and then warmed by spring sun. No dance of butterflies and hum of bees as they pollinate tassels of corn or the oddly delicate flowers of pumpkins or okra. No sense of connection to ancient rhythms of the world.
