The social dimension in the loss of the parent is presented by Myers (1986) and Becvar (2001) as a factor in the grieving process because the social and economic ramifications will vary with each loss. For example, if a 19-year-old son who has just gotten a job and moved to his own place loses his mother, he will not have as many adjustments to make compared to an 11-year-old son who is still emotionally and financially dependent on his single mom. This is an important point in this study, for it shows that there are many more changes a child ages 6-11 must make when losing a parent compared to an adult or even to a very, very young child or an older adolescent.
Archer (1999) (concurring with (Becvar, 2001; and Myers, 1986) states that there are two aspects to the loss of a parent. He labels those two components as the initial grief response and the consequences of the absence of the parent. The weight of these two different aspects of grief will be different depending on the age of the child, who will also vary in response to the death of a parent by gender as well as by individual personality.
