In the past year, the Catholic Church found itself in a scandal that has shaken the foundation of the Catholic Church in America. This paper attempts to make the case that the issue and the cause of the sexual abuse scandal between priests and their young parishioners was not the cause of what some people call the antiquated laws of celibacy, but failure by the priests and their superiors to adhere to the laws of man and god that prohibit adultery and lying. The paper draws analogies to the teachings of Aristotle and Plato as they relate to the situation. Finally, the paper touches on the reaction of the church to the crisis– the cover-up and the call for zero-tolerance at the annual Bishop’s convention.
Introduction
Sex scandals are nothing new. Since God gave sex to humankind, the act has been abused and not respected. Most sexual improprieties go unnoticed, as they are considered a part of society. Occasionally, a busted prostitution ring makes headlines or a polygamist has his 15 minutes of fame. So when the news broke on February 21, 2003, that John J. Geoghan, 66, an ex-priest, had been sentenced to 10 years in jail for fondling a 10-year-old boy, the world was mortified. The question is why? The answer may lie somewhere among other questions of biblical law, western culture and views on authority and respect.
