But people chose to take shortcuts or to achieve more in less time than is actually required. This is the reason why there is such a stark contrast between those in power and the majority of the people. The courts of the rulers reflect splendor while if you take a look at the agricultural fields they are neglected or intended. In addition, even if there is no food to survive, people are still dressed in their fineries not caring about the fact that others may be hungry. They are overfed and uncaring.
The author is discussing the inequity in a society which occurs when people don’t follow the right way and instead use other means which appear to be shortcuts in life. This leads to a condition where those in control become insensitive about other people’s conditions and only think about themselves, and thus live lavish lives not caring what may happen to others. According to the author, such people have strayed away from the right path.
