Introduction

There is a very strong relationship between the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Although the declaration was made on 4th of July 1776 and the constitution came eleven years after the declaration, however, the Constitution gives a legal framework to the Declaration which was more an ideological document. There are several things which prove that the Constitution reflects the idea of the Declaration of Independence.

The Declaration was a Foundation

The Founding Fathers planned for the Declaration to be the groundwork for the Government that was being established. The founding fathers left as a heritage to America the thought that freedom — personal unalienable rights — is a truth for which men will give up their lives, their wealth and their sacred respect. That foundation consisted of the values described in the Declaration. These values were to be lasting. They were to be fixed and unalterable. There was no condition at all for any amendment being made to the Declaration. The unalienable Rights of the individual were to be “secure” — that was the task given to the government that was being set up. The government which they were organizing was to be a protector of the God-given unalienable rights of each person in the United States. The government was not to be allowed to destroy those privileges. The government was to guard or secure those rights through a constitution which protected the rights.
