Why did Paul believe in justification by faith and not by works?
In his teachings, Paul put emphasis on faith so as to ensure that Christians would not be confused to think that good deeds alone would earn them favor before God. Rather, having faith in God would help them to do great wonders and miracles. Paul believed that whatever is done purely by the flesh is doomed to fail.
He believed that faith was the substance of every matter and demonstrated this by citing the heroes of faith who did great exploits which could otherwise not be achieved. He observes that God looks at the motive of the heart but not the deeds. In Romans (chapter 10), Paul wrote to the Romans that faith comes by hearing the word of God. He observes that those who seek justification by the works of the law cannot overcome the challenges that face them (Romans 9:32). Paul further emphasizes that justification comes through faith and not by work of the law (Galatians 2:16). In Hebrews (Chapter 11), Paul brings out the relationship between faith and works. He clearly illustrates that faith must precede the works and never the vice-versa. He shows this by using the heroes of faith such as Enoch, Abraham, Jacob, Isaac among others. Paul claims that without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6).
