Douglas Adams was a creative mind, born in Cambridge in 1952. Educated at St. John’s College, Cambridge with a BA and MA in English literature. Douglas Adams began his career as a struggling, comedy sketch writer (Harris).  His work garnered him the distinction of being the youngest author to receive the Golden Pen award and went on to receive the award twice. During his lifetime he was also nominated for the first Best of Young British Novelists award. He also won the 1985 Thames award for a video computer game and in 1982 he achieved something that had only Ian Fleming had matched when a British author had three books on the New York Times bestseller list and the Publisher’s Weekly bestseller list.

Douglas Adams official site’s biography (www.DouglasAdams.com) notes that his fame began as the creator of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which began as a BBC Radio Series in 1978. The success of the series founds its way into many best-selling novels, a television series, a record album, stage plays as well as a computer game. Other books followed in the Hitchhiker series. The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (1980); Life, The Universe and Everything (1982); So Long and Thanks for all the Fish (1984); and Mostly Harmless (1992). In 1982 his first two works became the basis for a six-part, highly successful television series. Soon afterward, in 1984 he formed a creative partnership with John Lloyd to write The Meaning of Liff. On the heels of the book’s huge success, the sequel The Deeper Meaning of Liff followed.

Adam’s website states that his books sold more than 15 million copies in the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia. He was also a best-selling author in Germany and Sweden.

Adams’ personal favorite was the product of a collaboration with zoologist Mark Carwardine to write Last Chance to See. This book is an account of a worldwide search for rare and endangered animal species.

Though he is best known for his literary works, Adams was the founding director of a digital media and Internet company called The Digital Village, which was later changed to h2g2. Under the name of this company, he created the CD-Rom Starship Titanic. The adventure game won him a Codie Award in 1999 (Biography).

In May 2001, Adams was living in Santa Barbara, California working on the screenplay for a feature film version of The Hitchhiker, when he died suddenly of a heart attack (Biography).
