The two books “Rape of Nanking” by Iris Chang and “Hiroshima” by John Hersey are true accounts of atrocities committed by humans on their fellow humans, one is done by the Japanese on the population of a city through inhumane and violent acts, like mass killings, rape and torture, the other is an account of six individuals as they pull their lives together after the deadly Atom Bomb destroyed Hiroshima.

Between December 1937 and March 1938, at least 369,366 Chinese civilians and prisoners of war were massacred by the invading troops. An estimated 80,000 women and girls were raped; many of them were then mutilated or murdered. Thousands of victims were beheaded, burned, bayoneted, buried alive, or disemboweled. However, the incident that stands out most in the Chinese mind for its uncontrolled brutality is the Nanking massacre. On December 9, the Japanese troops launched a huge attack on the city. In the following six weeks, the occupying forces betrothed in looting and mass execution that came to be known as the Nanking Massacre. Most experts concur that at least 300,000 Chinese died, and 20,000 women were raped.

In the case of Nanking massacre, the people had no means to defend themselves they were the victims of an atrocity, which was not like the A-Bomb, a one-time incidence but for the people, it went on and on and a majority of them did not live to tell the tale. The westerners created the safety zones where the people could hide in safety, however, whoever decided to return to their homes was killed.
