The world has been enthralled with Adolf Hitler since he first came to control in 1933. People crave to know what kind of man could lead a country to take over half of Europe, while also carrying out the genocide of eleven million people under his policy of forming a pure Aryan race. Hitler’s name has become tantamount to several ideas and images in history, past and present. He is often thought to be one of the evilest men ever to have lived because of his direction of the killing of six million Jews and five million others, including gypsies, homosexuals, political dissenters, and social pariahs. On the other hand, he has been perceived as a great political leader who reconstructed Germany after several years of wobbly governments and one of the most terrible depressions of its history. He is also described as a military genius because of the ease with which he took over several European nations.

Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889, the fourth offspring of Alois Schickelgruber and Klara Hitler in the Austrian town of Braunau. Two of his siblings died from diphtheria when they were children, and one died soon after birth. Young Adolf was showered with love and warmth by his mother. (The Holocaust)

When Adolf was three years old, his parents moved to Passau, along the Inn River, on the German side of the border. A brother, Edmond, was born two years later. The family moved once more in 1895 to the farm community of Hafeld, 30 miles southwest of Linz. (The Holocaust)
