The U.S. president is required by the nation’s Constitution to address Congress from time to time on the state of the union. That Constitutional requirement, if it were to be read in the absence of any knowledge of actual State of the Union speeches, might sound as if it were an admonition to the president to present a factual account of the current problems, and advantages, faced by the United States as the president is enjoined “from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union”. However, George W. Bush, like his predecessors, in his 2003 State of the Union Address, has focused on the second clauses of this sentence to “recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient”. He has used this annual message as a chance o argue for a number of policy positions that he would like to see brought about in the coming year. (more…)

In the past year, the Catholic Church found itself in a scandal that has shaken the foundation of the Catholic Church in America. This paper attempts to make the case that the issue and the cause of the sexual abuse scandal between priests and their young parishioners was not the cause of what some people call the antiquated laws of celibacy, but failure by the priests and their superiors to adhere to the laws of man and god that prohibit adultery and lying. The paper draws analogies to the teachings of Aristotle and Plato as they relate to the situation.
