Examination of Laura Bohanna’s Essay, “Shakespeare in the Bush”

Sample Essay

Words 941

There are two different basic starting points for understanding how culture works. The first assumption is that we are all – all of us humans – essentially the same under the skin. Certainly people are different in some ways – they speak different languages, wear different kinds of clothes, perform different rituals for marriages. But at base we are all the same: We all use language to communicate, we all wear clothes of some sort, we all perform rituals to mark the important changes in status in peoples lives – marriages, births, deaths.

There are a number of virtues to this model. One of them may be that the model is in fact true – that it accords with the objective, testable reality of the world. Another is that it is an essentially democratic view of the world: We are all equal to each other regardless of skin color, regardless of race or religion or ethnicity or nationality or wealth. The poorest outcast in Calcutta is equal to Bill Gates because we are all human and so share core values, practices, beliefs, inclinations. This is the model of culture that anthropologist Laura Bohannan took with her when she went to visit the Tiv.

But before we examine her attempt to have the Tiv appreciate the Shakespearian play “Hamlet” – perhaps the greatest play ever written in the English language and one of the greatest plays written since the Greeks first though up the idea of theater in its formal, proscenium theater sense – we should consider another model of culture.

Social Stratification Essay

Sample Essay

Words 612

1. Compare and contrast the perspectives taken on stratification by Karl Marx and Max Weber. Then, show how the view of Ralf Dahrendorf and Talcott Persons compare with Marx and Weber.

Stratification explains the different layers that exist in society. Whilst some disagree that it is possible for a society to run without such a configuration, most known communities do experience some sort of class division. According to Karl Marx, that stratification represents that working class people are not expected to advance socio-economically, while the wealthy may carry on to utilize the proletariat generation after generation Max Weber and his followers, also evaluate Marx’s view and point out that social stratification is not simply based on economic inequalities but is evenly shaped by status and power differences. Marx,  believed that people were shaped by the society in which they exist. Weber, a social action theorist, believed that individuals create society by action and interaction. Marx based his view of class structure on ownership of the means of production on the other hand Weber supposed it was dependant on “life chances”. Life chances depended on wealth and skills; the upper class had the most beneficial life chances, and the poor, the least. Class could be deciding by economic situation, market situation, status and political party. Whist Marx split society into two distinct elements; Weber saw that social structure was more multifaceted.

Italian Renaissance Essay

Sample Essay

Words 870

The historical backdrop against which the intellectual and cultural upheaval of the Renaissance era played itself out in its preliminary stages left its permanent mark on the character of the intellectual and cultural ferment. Set in the city-states of Italy in the fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the constant insecurity, both economic and political, and intense volatility of the historical situation provided the material for new intellectual, cultural, and social experiments. That would be the conclusion presents the means of constructing a new European monoculture identity, one focused on humanistic studies, science, and the arts. (Burckhardt)

In the twelfth century, Italy saw a resurgence of urban living, which matures into a flood in the thirteenth century. The Italian cities, particularly Venice, had long served as intermediaries in the trade between central Europe and the Muslim and Byzantine states to the east. As they grew wealthy, many of these cities turn into centers of bnking long before the rest of Europe had discovered this rewarding area of commerce. In large part, medieval church doctrine prevented the growth of bnking and money markets because it considered lending money at interest called usury to be a corporeal sin, that is, a sin which guaranteed the damnation of one’s spirit. (Burckhardt)

The phenomenal growth of wealth in the Italian cities ultimately led to the growth of a series of city-states, that is, personage area ruled centrally from a single city. In contrast to cities in central and northern Europe that were ruled by monarchs, the Italian cities were permissible a high degree of independence and expanded their political sway over the areas encircle them. (Hooker)

“Amusing ourselves to Death” by Neil Postman

Book Review

Words 860

Introduction

The book Amusing ourselves to death is written by Neil Postman, who died this month. He was suffering from Lung cancer. In this book Neil Postman, a former Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences at New York University, contends compellingly that television is changing our culture into one huge field for show business in which all public dealings, politics, faith, news, culture, journalism, trade – have been turned into a type of entertainment. Amusing Ourselves to Death is a critical appeal for use to question what is happening before it is too late.

This paper looks at the book with a brief summary followed by an evaluation of the book, this book is very clear about the influence of the medium of television, not only on the people but also on the business side of entertainment, and especially the effect on the print media and journalism.

Synopsis

Amusing Ourselves to Death graphs the decay of Western ‘civilization’ during the past 150 years from the exclusive position of individual communication and discussion. Postman’s topic is the weakening of the printed medium and the dominance of the television with its propensity to present everything, turmoil, government, and weather conditions as sort of amusement. Postman starts by talking about how America was traditionally a “typographical” society. The wealth of debate, teaching, and correspondence was the printed word. With the arrival of the television. His arguments are more than believable and he has a credible viewpoint.

The final consequence, as Postman understands it, is the contraction of society’s communication as TV disintegrates our idea of what comprises more meaningful things like news, political discussion, fine art, even spiritual reflections. The initial chapters outline America’s past interest in the written word, from colonial leaflets to the printing of the Lincoln-Douglas contest.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, American public discourse, being rooted in the bias of the printed word, was serious, inclined toward rational argument and presentation, and, therefore, made up of meaningful content. (52)
