Symbolism of the Handkercief in Othello: Essay

Sample Essay

Words 1,259

Does Shakespeare intend for us to see Othello as a man of honor who, although he brings horror into the world, in the end redeems himself? Perhaps – although the answer to this question is far from unambiguous. Certainly we see Othello as a man who is fundamentally concerned with acting honorably. Certainly we see him as a foil to Iago, a man whose only loyalty is to himself and not to any higher calling. In the end, Othello is redeemed, although not entirely.

He shifts from being a hero at the beginning of the play to a villain to, in the end, a tragic hero, a man who has been redeemed but also transformed. This ambiguity that lies at the heart of Othello’s character is summed up in Desdemona’s handkerchief – that white cloth spotted with red that Shakespeare no doubt intends to evoke the blood-spotted marriage bed. The handkerchief, with its mixing of chastity and sexuality, naivete and experience, concealment and revelation, is a symbol of the complex ways in which Othello is both lost and redeemed in the play.

Shakespeare reminds us throughout the play that as a black man who enters the white world, the destruction that Othello causes even unintentionally must still be laid at his feet because of his original trespass. Thus while he is in the end restored in part to his original stature, he remains diminished from the man we saw in the first scene.

The Electric Dress—A Symbol of Cultural, Economical and Technological Change: Sample Essay

Sample Essay

Words 1,341

The Electric dress is made up of bulbs and electric wires of different shapes and colors and looks like a post modern interpretation of a Christmas tree—particularly when it is not worn. Tanaka by reinterpreting the kimono was actually pointing towards the change that had occurred in the traditional Japanese society in the post war period.  The bright lights of the dress symbolize the modern world. The “Electric Dress” which the artist wore and performed in anticipated feminist questions which were later focused on by other artists in the seventies. In addition this was one of the first times when the body was used in an artistic and risky situation.

The Electric Dress changes the association of materials to an individual’s body and action.  The danger of wearing the piece and the unnatural look of the lights are an observation about the modern women’s fashion. Light appears to a symbol of the technology and its dehumanizing affect on life and individuals and the superficiality and meaninglessness of fashions. The symbolism of the Dress is a deviance from the Gutai movement as its members preferred to use direct materials rather than allusions or symbols.  However some argue that Tanaka’s Electric Dress is not at all symbolic, rather the shock value of her attired in the dangerous outfit is the real intention. However one cannot deny the feminist significance of the piece as it shows through the ridiculousness of electrical light. (Munroe, 1994, 85)

First four Books of the Odyssey

Sample Paper

Words 1,320

Odysseus’ true son stood up, drew on his tunic and his mantle, slung on a sword-belt and a new-edged sword, tied his smooth feet into good rawhide sandals, and left his room, a god’s brilliance upon him. (Homer II. 2-6)

The symbolism of the new edged sword and smooth feet show that although he is inexperienced however he is not only optimistic but happy about his new life and endeavors.

The resentment Telemachus felt against the suitors was though something comparatively new however it was time that he realized his responsibilities (Olson 75). Telemachus did as Athena directed him to do. He called an assembly and told the suitors to leave the house, this is the coming of age when he performs his first duty as the man of the house, and consequently he drew a line in his territory. Telemachus then moved forward and acquired a ship for his voyage. In both of his visits Telemachus conducted himself as a stately man — courteous, and civil—very different from the initial boy. The text makes several allusions to Telemachus being sober, considerate, confident and very sure of himself. These descriptions of his thoughts indicate desirable adult male character, in other words, he is taking on the role of being the man, the leader in the family.
