We Were Soldiers Once: Film Review

Film Review Essay

Words 727

The war in Vietnam was about many things. On the largest scale, it was one skirmish in the long, cold war between the United States and the Soviet Union, between the kind of democracy practiced in America and the kind of socialism practiced in Russia.

It was also, of course, about different factions fighting for power in Vietnam itself, the descendants of complex political and historical conditions that had been in flux in Southeast Asia for a century.

On another level entirely – one that was both apart from global and local politics and yet intersected it in some ways – it was about taking responsibility. About the United States taking responsibility for democracy, in part, but much more about individuals taking responsibility for their own actions.

The question of what a solider is responsible for in war is the central question of We Were Soldiers Once, both the recently released movie and the book of almost the same title on which it was based.

The action in the movie takes place in November 1965, in a place called the Ia Drang Valley, and is instigated when platoons from the 7th Cavalry. During the course of one day, November 14, the entire 7th Calvalry would land in “LZ X-Ray”. Over the next four days, thousands would die.

Korean Division Paper

Sample Paper

Words 2,556

A key component of the rebuilding of North Korea, ruled by Kim Il Song until his death in 1994, was industrialization, influenced politically and efficiently by the Soviet Union, China and other Communist allies. But by the mid 1990’s, with the fall of the Soviet Union; a deteriorating economy; and terrible natural disasters of flood, drought, and famine; North Korea has had to face deep hardship, increased isolation, and dependence on food aid. The social institutions and principles still reflect their roots in the fusion of feudalism, Confucianism, and Communism.

North Korea’s relationship with the South has determined much of their post-World War II history and still forms a large part of its foreign policy. North and South Korea have had a hard and hostile relationship from the Korean War. In recent years, North Korea has followed a mixed policy:

  • Seeking to develop economic relations with South Korea
  • Win the support of the South Korean public for better North-South engagement
  • Maintaining a threatening conventional force posture on the DMZ and in neighboring waters.

The demilitarized zone in South Korea is the place where South Korea citizens are not permissible to visit. The border is too well known and too frightening for Koreans to fall across it by accident. They are driven to it by wish to escape, or to be coming together with family, or to spy.  The 38th Parallel had been fixed by common agreement as the divining line to two regimes zones in which the Americans and Russians would receive the surrender of the Japanese forces, but after the autumn of 1945, it had become a real frontier (Fontaine 395)

Sports in the Society

Sample Paper

Words 1,320

Because sport is part of society there exist some of the relationships between sport and other social institutions.

Sport and the Economy: the input and output of money due to sport and sports associated goods have a major effect on both local and national economies.

Sport and Politics: two revelation of the link between sport and politics are:

  • The affect on sports of direct and indirect rules and laws the government sets. Whilst sports have a comparatively high level of self-rule they must stay within the bounds of civil law; for instance, the use of physical violence in contact sports may be suppose to break the law but are these boundaries clear when related to sports? Title IX in the USA demonstrates how federal government check equal opportunities in school sports participation for women.
  • Sport can be used as a political device. Many politicians have been rapid to seize on the powerful influence of being linked with sport, particularly when linked with the generation of feelings of local and national pride. On an international level, sport may be used as a promotion tool for a country’s ideologies; this is demonstrated by the strong emphasis placed on sporting competition between the USA and Soviet Union during the Cold War as ‘Capitalism vs. Communism’. Sport has been used to display political stances, for example the sporting boycott of Apartheid South Africa.

The Cold War

Sample Term Paper

Words 2,084

The Cold War became a reality because the United States and Soviet Union had fundamentally different visions of the post-war world.  American politicians believed that the nations of the world were interdependent and should offer open markets for American goods and services. In this vision, free and open trade was essential to prevent another Depression. In addition, many Americans were proud of their democratic system, believed in Manifest Destiny, and wanted to “share” their version of progressive self-determination with the rest of the world, especially with the newly-independent states of Asia and Africa. Even though the superpowers shunned direct and all-out war, a number of minor clashes exhausted their energies and resources: Berlin, Korea, Hungary, Cuba, and Czechoslovakia. The United States fought a long and in the end pointless war in Vietnam. The Soviet Union was similarly drawn into a civil war in Afghanistan. Both these fights failed.

The conflict between the world views of the United States and the U.S.S.R. came to a head with revolt in Iran, Greece, and Turkey. During World War II, the British had engaged southern Iran, while the Soviets had occupied the north in the area bordering the Soviet republic of Azerbaijan. At war’s end, neither side wanted to pull out of the Middle East because both required access to the region’s rich oil fields. The Soviet Union also sought to protect its southern border. Great Britain asked the United States for aid to prop up the pro-British Shah and to stop Arab nationalists from gaining power. In 1946, the United Nations negotiated a settlement between the United States and the Soviet Union, but name calling between the American and Soviet delegates marred the assembly.
