Nursing Essay

Sample Essay

Words 1,272

Summary: 4 pages, 5 sources, APA format.  The popularity of the Nursing profession is declining at a dangerous rate, due in part to inadequate pay, overwork and high stress levels leading current RNs to leave the field in search of work elsewhere:  a discussion of the problem and some possible solutions.

Introduction

The situation for the average RN in America does indeed look grim, but the situation for the average patient looks even worse.  The popularity of the Nursing profession is declining at a dangerous rate, due in part to inadequate pay, overwork and high stress levels leading current RNs to leave the field in search of work elsewhere, or the same issues coupled with a poor image of the nurse as somehow an unglamorous “helper” profession, driving potential newcomers to the field in search of more lucrative and rewarding careers.  In addition, the aging “Baby Boomer” generation and a general rise in population lead to a unique and truly alarming problem:  just when we begin to need nurses the most, we don’t seem to have any around.

The multitudinous proposed solutions to the problem don’t seem to offer the wave of hope one would wish for.  First of all, to simply pay nurses more is not an available option for most US hospitals, already working as not-for-profit businesses as funds would be compromised elsewhere in order to offer a salary increase.  It is clear that the image surrounding the profession, which remains archaic, must be changed, but changing public image is not an immediate, nor direct solution to the growing problem at hand.  Many states have proposed placing prescriptive regulations on a hospital’s nurse-to-patient ratio, but these mandatory quotas can have a negative effect on the system as well.  A solution cannot come overnight; this much is clear.  Nonetheless, the problem must be addressed now in order to relieve the burden on our own health at a later time.

Why People Shouldn’t Smoke: Essay

Sample Essay

Words 2,020

There have been anti-smoking campaigns since the 1960s, and today the ads and commercials on TV are aimed more towards the youth culture—those who’ve not started smoking yet and might be around it—while commercials to stop the addiction to nicotine through patches and gums are geared towards the adults who’ve already become addicted. Not smoking is a very big issue as we can see from the proliferation of ads and commercials as well as the governmental involvement with tax-hikes on cigarettes to discourage smokers and the declaration of public places such as restaurants and shopping malls as smoke-free. There has been a stigma attached to those people who do smoke as can be witnessed by their division from the rest of the public into smoker areas. Everyone from the government to hospitals to movie stars, friends, and family claim smoking is a filthy habit one shouldn’t start in on, and everyone gives very good reasons why someone shouldn’t smoke, and I agree. The biggest reasons not to smoke concerns your health, the health of the people around you, the financial burden of buying cigarettes, cigars, and pipes and tobacco, and the health and beauty of the environment.

One of the biggest reasons not to smoke that immediately comes to mind is health-related: “Cigarette smoking kills an estimated 264,000 men and 178,000 women in the United States each year” (“Tobacco”). Smoking has also been known to cause lung cancer, heart disease, and the chronic lung diseases of emphysema, bronchitis, and chronic airways obstruction; all of these “are responsible for the largest number of smoking-related deaths” (“Tobacco”). Something that oftentimes isn’t considered when discussing smoking are smoking pipes or cigars—usually people only think about cigarettes—which “increase the risk of dying from cancers of the lung, esophagus, larynx, and oral cavity” (“Tobacco”). Do you really want to increase your risk of a deadly disease? By smoking you’re only increasing your chances and shortening your life.

Shortage of Vaccinations Essay

Sample Essay

Words 2,194

Analysis

All that seems to matter to the pharmaceutical industry is that their profit margin continues to rise each and every year.  The monopoly greatly affects our nation’s health because of a company’s ability to control certain immunizations from reaching the marketplace due to any number of reasons—without more competitors for the same kinds of vaccinations available the public relies heavily on those twelve companies that supply our nation with protection against diseases and ailments of all kinds (CBS, “Vaccine,” n.p.).

Pharmaceutical companies are constantly gouging the government, which many times fronts the bills for testing and development of newer, better, safer drugs for the population, by delaying the manufacturing, demanding longer test periods, and whatever possible else they can think of in order to gain more money that will (the companies claim) help speed the process by helping research and development.  This is a costly game for everyone involved because not all research turns up the originally funded and hoped for outcome, and while the companies delay trying to grab more money out of the government and whoever else is helping fund the research, the public sits and waits impotently.  With immunizations, money is still invested through government grants, loans, etc., so these companies want to prolong the fiscal flow for as long as possible.  (Carnell, n.p.)

As of now, there are shortages of vital childhood vaccines, which increase the risk of our nation’s children catching certain illnesses many of our generation were and still are vaccinated against.  These shortages have prompted the majority of states to change their immunization requirements of schools and other immunization-requiring organizations in order for children to enroll without the routine set of immunizations:

  • DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis)
  • Haemophilus influenzae
  • Hepatitis B
  • MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella)
  • Pneumococcal disease
  • Polio
  • Chicken pox

Health consists of keeping a check of various things such as your weight, the amount you eat and the kind of food you eat, your strength and your endurance according to your age and gender. These are only some of the things which are kept in mind when considering how healthy a person is.

Fitness training helps a person achieve health goals which they have. Combined with good eating habits and regular exercise, any individual is likely to see an improvement in his/her health. Most fitness training which people indulge in include aerobics, stretching and even some form of strength training. People who indulge in fitness training do so with a purpose in mind; with some form of goal in mind which they wish to achieve. Goals usually consist of losing a certain amount of weight or increasing the level of strength they can withstand.

There are many trainers available and many gyms which are accessible to people who wish to take part in fitness training. The common thing to all fitness programs is that every program starts and ends with stretching whenever it is carried out. There are many various fitness training programs available for a person to choose from according to their health goals. Business Risks Faced by Jet Blue Airlines: Essay

Sample Essay

Words 1,674

What is the biggest risk faces on a regular basis?

On regular bases Jet Blue Airline is facing several risks including deregulation and new regulation, aircrew supply and demand, noise footprint management, and international terrorism. These issues, as well as day to day business challenges present many risks which, if not properly managed, can have profound consequences, for example:

  • Physical risks to aircraft (fixed wing and rotary)
  • Personal risks to pilots, crew and passengers
  • Ground risks such as health & safety, passenger and baggage security screening, Property damage to buildings and aircraft, service continuity and environmental protection of airport surrounds
  • Operating risks include food quality management, aircraft air-worthiness and documentation management, security, navigational aid reliability & calibration, industrial relations, aircrew certification, airport infrastructure reliability, fuel quality management and engineering reliability
  • Business risks such as liability, securing international landing rights, competition, fluctuations in currency and fuel costs, contract management, compliance and renewal of regulatory consents and dependency on information technology platforms for scheduling, safety verification and reservations.

How they respond to it? How could they respond better?

In my opinion following are the ways to respond better and manage the risks:

  • Monitoring the operations and cabin and cockpit air quality
  • A specific national standard for checking and monitoring the engine seals and air quality in all passenger commercial jet aircraft
  • Maintenance procedures (including specific maintenance procedures for ageing aircraft)
