Genetically Modified Organisms: Essay

Sample Essay

Words 4,634

Abstract

Ecologists and other scientists have long expressed concerns about the possible effect of releasing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) into the environment, while others emphasize their possible environmental benefits. The broad consequences of national and international regulations underscore the policy and research communities’ need for current scientific information and for awareness of where informational gaps occur. There is a current emphasis on crop plants, but developments of genetically engineered fish, trees, and microbes may alter perspectives. Public debate about the acceptability of genetically modified organisms in the production of food and feed has included controversy about risks of harming human health and/or the natural environment. These reactions are due, in part, to strong judgments formed from memorable events. Such judgments are common when individuals do not have a good understanding of risks. Economic and psychological theories of decision making provide understanding of how these judgments are formed, how they might evolve, and what can be done to influence them. Public dialogue and action must account for cognitive difficulties assessing risks to stimulate public evaluation that gives full consideration to the benefits and cost of genetically modified organisms. Genetic alteration of plants and animals is seen by many as an interference with nature that has unknown and potentially disastrous interactions with human genetics and natural ecosystems. This paper looks at the concept of GMO exploring the available information to decide whether in fact GMO’s are a threat to the society.

Economic Losses due to Terrorist Attacks in the United States: Essay

Sample Essay

Words 986

Events that occurred on 11th September have had far-reaching consequences for the whole world in general but especially for the United States of America where the impact has been greatest, effecting the country socially psychologically and economically. The U.S. economy was already in a decline and there was and economic slowdown, however the events of 9/11, as it has been called, severely affected the projections which were quite positive. As Brian Westbury has observed in his report:

“The costs of 9/11 have never been accurately gauged; however, it is speculated to be upwards of $120.” (Wesbury 1)

In addition to taking many lives, the attack on the World Trade Center also destroyed a lot of material and human capital.  Apprehensions about security have now become dominant, and individuals, businesses, and government are spending more to protect themselves from terror attacks.  Some of the expenditures of these measures will become more obvious in the long run.

At the national level, the main consequence of the attack is largely emotional.  Investment is a very good indicator of a country’s growth and health the investor confidence has been greatly been effected since the terrorist attacks and people are apprehensive about investing large sums. In addition, in a newspaper report it was stated:.

Social Impact Policy Regarding Gambling: Essay

Sample Essay

Words 1,749

Five recommendations are made to strengthen health and social policy regarding gambling.

Balance the public interest: In 1985 provinces were given exclusive control over gambling. All provinces now own a variety of gambling products, receive significant revenue from gambling and fulfill several roles related to gambling, including regulation of the industry and provision of services to those with gambling problems. Policy-makers at all levels of government should regularly monitor and assess the public owner-operator models now in place, to ensure that there is a responsible balance between encouraging gambling as entertainment and protecting the public from gambling-related harm.

Monitor gambling advertising: Public guardians and government regulatory bodies should scrutinize the scope of gambling advertising and, in particular, the messages to youth, lower socioeconomic groups and vulnerable populations. Health officials should advocate in this area and, where possible, ensure that owners and operators prominently display the odds of winning and losing for each of their gambling activities.

Assess the impact on quality of life: Policy analysts should assess the impact of the expansion of gambling on the quality of life of individuals, families and communities. Quality of life encompasses the interplay among social, health, economic and environmental conditions. To better inform policy, government should fund a credible scientific body to develop a standard methodology to estimate the health, social and economic costs and benefits of gambling and related problems. Key stakeholders should be involved in building consensus, and public health expertise should be represented in this activity.

A Career in Maternity Nursing: Essay

Sample Essay

Words 689

Humans have nursed each other since the beginning of the species. In fact, indeed attempts to care for other individuals to help reduce their pain and increase their overall health are seen in a wide range of primates:  Nursing is arguably something that is encoded in our very genes. However, modern nursing can realistically trace its roots only to the 19th century, which is where this paper begins.

Florence Nightingale helped to revolutionize the practice – and profession – of nursing in the middle of the 19th century when she established a series of  training schools for nurses that instructed nurses in a range of skills, including basic hygiene, as Dossey (1999) describes.  While many of the problems in 19th century hospitals certainly were based in the limited medical technology and knowledge that were available at the time, many of the problems resulted from sloppy practices.

Nightingale trained her nurses in the latest medical knowledge, but she also trained them in organization so that the hospitals in which they worked might take advantage not only of scientific advances but also of fundamental managerial principles.

These were especially important as applied to childbirth, for women often died as the result of infections after giving birth and the Nightingale-era reforms helped provide a safe arena for women in labor, although the changes that were brought during the era of the rise of maternity nursing were not always entirely beneficial to women.
