If English was declared as the official language, nobody’s private or business lives would be ruined. No day to day activity would be hampered if English was the official language. The use of English as the official language would only be used in order to conduct business in the government (S.I. Hayakawa).
Today in the United States of America, various societies exist with people belonging to various cultures. In every state and in every city, we can find a German-town, China-town and even Greek-town. America is therefore considered to be a multicultural society. Along with the existence of various cultures and societies, there are many languages spoken there as well. When people think about the language spoken in America, English is the language which comes to the minds of many as being the national language. The United States however does not have any language which is considered its national language.

Theodore Roethke was an American poet born in 1908 in Michigan. He was the son of German immigrants who settled there. His father owned a green house along with Theodore’s uncle. During adolescence he had to deal with his uncle’s suicide and his father’s death from cancer. Roethke studied at Michigan University and subsequently at Harvard University; however because of financial reasons he couldn’t complete his studies and started teaching English at different universities. During his stay at University of Michigan he started suffering from manic depression and translated that into his poetry. He then shifted to Washington University and was associated with the poets of the Northwest. In 1953 he married a former student, but ten years later he died of a heart attack while swimming in a friend’s pool (History Link). This paper is a look at Roethke’s poem name “My Papa’s Waltz”.
“My Papa’s Waltz” is a short poem of only four stanzas and the language used is quite simple, and is unlike his other work which is more complex and longer. The use of words do not give a very clear picture throughout the poem and an initial reaction after reading the poem, seems to be of a little boy being terrorized by his father. The words Whiskey on your breath and But I hung on like death; this may indicate a drunk and abusing father who is prone to violence. Some critics agree. Ciardi considers the poem to be the “poem of terror” (369). While others disagree, according to Malkoff:

For some individuals degrees are a means to acquire education, or to improve their job and career prospects. For others degrees are not just means to jump ahead they offer a person to add to his or her own education and experience. My career and educational paths are symbols of a systematic and gradual progression through several organisations in different capacities and with each subsequent change there has been a widening of experience and knowledge base.
I did my bachelors in 1993 majoring in Mathematics, after a lapse of 14 years I acquired my MBA in Finance in 2007. This may indicate a major gap to many observers with a jump from one career field to another. However, my resume indicates that my various positions over this period have been upwardly progressing evolving and developing. My work experience at Mast Industries led to a position of Financial Analyst at Sycamore a subsidiary of Citi Group. This four year period was fundamental in improving my understanding of the capital markets and various models associated with the markets. My Chinese background again gave me additional opportunities here as I monitored investee organisations in China. After graduating from University of Illinois at Chicago, I was able to get a position at China Direct a US Owned organization based in China. I work with companies in China to prepare business plans and also converted the filing system to English.

Thomas Paine (1737-1809), writer and revolutionary, wrote the popular pamphlet, Common Sense, a call for American independence and democracy. Driven by desire for freedom and justice, Paine’s thinking reflected French and English writers from age of reasoning. Paine published Common Sense in January 1776, six months before the Continental Congress declared independence from Britain. Of 2.5 million individuals living in the 13 colonies, nearly 500,000 obtained text of the pamphlet, suggesting the mood of the times. The essay reportedly persuaded even George Washington that the best answer to the crisis with England was to withdraw support to the crown. Jefferson apparently was motivated by Common Sense when writing the Declaration of Independence.
All through his life, Thomas Paine encouraged liberal ideology and standing up for one’s values. He thought that all people have the right to be free. Paine uncovered his feelings to the world through his Writing. He had a deep power on the American Revolution and on many groups in America and Europe. Thomas Paine showed that it does not make a difference what status you are born into, or how great a proper education you get. What matters is what is in your intelligence and feeling.
