The term “the Romantic Movement” is the movement of a particular style or genre that was popular in the last years of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th. The term is rather misleading as it was not a proper movement nor was it called romanticism at that time. The celebrated writers of the period were different both in the temperament of their work and in their significant abilities. They did not call themselves “Romantics”, and the description they were assigned, both from the common people and from the critics, was gradual.

The movement though not a formal one grew as a reaction against the age of enlightenment. It is possible though to separate some of the unique characteristics of Romanticism. These can best be observed in the poetic theory and practice, and have an apparent association with the political and social turmoil of the time: such movements as the American and the French revolution, with their stress on natural privileges and the value of the human being, are echoed in the thoughts of the writers. One of the leaders in the movement was John Keats.

John Keats, who was one of the greatest English poets and a foremost individual in the Romantic Movement. He was born in 1795 in Moorfields, London. His father died when he was eight and his mother when he was fourteen; these distressing conditions made him predominantly close to his two brothers, George and Tom, and his sister Fanny.
