AIDS or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome is a fatal disease and caused by HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus. People misunderstand the two as being the same which they are not. The human immune system i.e. the system that fights against diseases weakens in AIDS and the virus attacks the immune system so badly that it eventually exhausts completely and causes death. White blood cells are the actual disease fighters in our body and this virus takes over the reproductive system of the WBC and instead of producing more WBCs starts producing more of the virus cells.
A huge misconception about AIDS is that it can be contracted upon direct contact like shaking hands, hugging or kissing etc. This holds completely untrue and the real reasons for AIDS transmission to another person have discussed ahead. Sexual intercourse with a person diagnosed with AIDS may transmit the disease to the other one as well. Apart from that, it can be contracted from breast milk of an infected mother or transmitted to babies via the infected mother’s fetus. Receiving the blood of an AIDS infected person also causes this disease to be transmitted or using the same needle that has been used on an AIDS patient.
AIDS still remains an incurable disease and although death from it may b delayed through medication, it can’t be avoided. Symptoms of this disease include weakness, headache, body ache, sweat, fever, tiredness and exhaustion, the stiffness of muscles and weight loss etc.
It is said that prevention is better than cure. AIDS can strike anyone anytime and it lies in our and only our hands to prevent ourselves from it by being careful about our interactions and possible sources of AIDS.
