There are many adults who may have experienced some form of a traumatic experience in their lives. Due to this, they may display symptoms such as having difficulty in performing new tasks, feeling guilty, blaming themselves for things, being concerned about their own and other’s safety, being depressed and unable to trust others, particularly those who may be in a position of power. Broken sleep, fear of taking risks, panic attacks, unable to concentrate and destroyed self esteem are also some of the things which might be experienced by these adults (Mojab and McDonald).
Some people however may not display any of the symptoms mentioned. Others however may become affected by PTSD- post traumatic stress disorder which is a disorder characterized by frequent flashbacks, always expecting some form of danger, abusing substances, dissociation, constriction and even harm to their memory to an extent (Isserlis).
Experiencing the consequences of a trauma on a learner may not be apparent immediately. Some hints may include a learner missing his/her class, avoiding taking tests and spacing out. This is often interpreted as the learner not being interested in the activities and discussions taking place in the classroom. In the book, ‘Frames of mind’, the theory of multiple intelligences has been proposed by Howard Gardner (Smith). Howard Gardner, in the book talks about 7 intelligences. He later on added two more intelligences to the existing seven. The very first 2 which he talks about are well respected and valued in the public school system. These two intelligences are the Logical-Mathematic Intelligence and the other is the Linguistic Intelligence. Linguistic Intelligence as the name states is related to the use of languages. It focuses on the ability of a person to speak in a certain language/languages and to learn new words. The Logical Mathematic Intelligence deals with being able to work well with numbers.
Another type of intelligence is the Musical Intelligence which refers to the ability of a person to be able to perform, recognize and write music. This is something which is not quite easy to do. Bodily-Kinetic Intelligence refers to making use of the mind as well as the body in order to solve various problems. Visual-Spatial Intelligence tries to understand the patterns of space which exist. Interpersonal Intelligence is the skill which a person has which enables him/her to understand other people. Intrapersonal however refers to being able to understand oneself. Psychology is the study of human and animal behavior. There are various perspectives within psychology and the upcoming paragraphs deal with 3 psychological perspectives; humanistic, psychodynamic and behavioral.
All three perspectives try to understand behavior and makes use of varying techniques in order to do so. Each perspective tries to search for answers to different questions which exist about behavior. Each of these perspectives is different and hence has its own reasoning and explanation. Among the perspectives of psychology, some have been accepted by many whereas others have had difficulty in being accepted.
The humanistic perspective was developed by Abraham Maslo and Carl Rogers, the Psychodynamic perspective was developed by Erik Erikson and Sigmund Freud and John B. Watson developed the Behavioral perspective of psychology.
The psychodynamic perspective focuses primarily on the activity of the unconscious mind. This approach suggests that normal as well as abnormal behavior is determined by the unconscious forces which govern our mind (David and Palladino).
The behavioral perspective focuses on behaviors which can be observed. However it does not focus much on cognitive processes such as thinking (Davis and Palladino). It also tries to understand how various types of behavior take place.
